Nature & Sustainability - Parque La Mexicana

Habitat

Vegetation Assessment

The park’s vegetation combines species native to Mexico City with plants adapted to Santa Fe’s climate and soil. Today, La Mexicana is home to thousands of trees, 80,000 pollinator-friendly shrubs, and more than one million plants.

Green Spaces

We have 70,000 square meters of lawn for all kinds of activities, including picnics, 80,000 shrubs (most of them pollinator-friendly), and 40,000 square meters of ground cover on the slopes. More than 1 million plants were planted, and during the pandemic more than 600 shrubs grew into young trees.

Lakes

The park’s lakes serve several environmental functions: they “trap” airborne dust particles, many of them pollutants. They also help lower urban temperatures and increase humidity throughout the surrounding area.

Migratory Birds

The lakes provide a home for migratory birds. In recent days, more than 30 ducks have been spotted at night.

Wildlife Assessment

For 50 years, this land was home to a blue sand quarry with a pit reaching 60 meters (197 feet) deep. By reusing construction debris from the 1985 earthquake, soil from the development of Santa Fe, and 70,000 cubic meters of fertile soil, the site was transformed into the park we know today.

Water Management & Conservation

La Mexicana was designed to make the most of every drop of water. From the beginning, the park incorporated a water management system that takes advantage of the natural slopes of its gardens and walkways, along with a bioswale and drainage grates that collect rainwater and direct it to a 24,000-cubic-meter reservoir beneath the lower lake.

During the dry season, the park uses treated water for irrigation, cleaning, and restrooms, while potable water is reserved exclusively for human consumption.

The park’s two lakes are also part of this system. Water circulates continuously to help keep it clean while also helping regulate temperature, capture dust and pollutants, and increase humidity throughout the surrounding area.
